Required Documentation
When claiming through mail, you must enclose:
- A copy of your driver’s license or government-issued photo ID
- A copy of your social security card
- A mailing address
- A daytime telephone number
If you win a prize worth $601 or more, you must claim it by mail or in person.
If you win a prize worth $5,000 or more, you'll have 25% in federal taxes withheld from your prize and West Virginia will levy a state tax of 6.5%.
Lost Tickets
It is your responsibility to keep your tickets safe, as the West Virginia Lottery cannot pay out a prize to someone without a valid entry. A lottery ticket should be thought of like a dollar bill – it is what is known as a bearer instrument – so anyone in possession of a ticket is assumed to be the owner. Without a ticket, you can’t claim any prizes it would have been due.
You should make sure that you sign the back of your ticket as soon as you buy it. This won’t stop you losing it, but it will prevent anyone else from being able to claim a prize with it, and give you a better chance of being reunited with your ticket if you misplace it.
Any prizes that are unclaimed are returned to the West Virginia Lottery prize fund for second chance drawings and other promotions.
